Vaughn Aubuchon's "1-pagers" can be very useful,
particularly his summary of
information on various aspects of Google. The section on
how Google treats keywords, is excerpted below. The first three are
considerably more effective than the remaining.
Use these as a guide as you fine-tune
your site content.
First word best, second is second best ...
in domain name
Same as in page-name-with-hyphens
in title tag
Close to beginning, tag 10 - 60 characters
description meta tag
Shows theme - less than 200 chars.
in keyword metatag
Shows theme - less than 10 words.
Every word MUST appear in the body.
NO single word more than twice.
density in body text
5 - 20% - (all keywords/ total words)
Individual kw density
1 - 3% - (each keyword/ total words)
in H1, H2 and H3
Use H1 font style
In strong, bold, italic, etc.
proximity (for 2+ kws)
Adjacent is best
Anticipate query - match word order.
(how early in page/tag)
Most important at top of page,
in bold, in large font
Keyword in alt text
Should describe graphic
in links to site pages
Links out anchor text use keyword?
